Kim D on burnout, boundaries and knowing when to slow down

How Kim D is redefining success by choosing rest, setting boundaries, and refusing to stay busy at the expense of her well-being.

Kim DePaola, known to viewers as Kim D, built a public reputation for speaking her mind on "The Real Housewives of New Jersey." Behind the on-screen conflict, she managed a fashion business and a demanding schedule. Her experience offers entrepreneurs a lesson that has little to do with television: Success requires boundaries.
In an interview, DePaola discussed the pressure to remain busy, her changing priorities, and the importance of making time for herself.
Her priorities are clear. “My dogs and clothes,” she said when asked what she is obsessed with.
When a full calendar stops working
For years, DePaola balanced her boutique, television work, and a busy social calendar. She left little time for rest, and the pace took a toll.
After speaking with her doctor about her exhaustion, she started to reconsider how she managed her days. She no longer wanted to measure productivity by the number of commitments she could fit into a week.
“I come first,” DePaola said.
That shift meant protecting time at home instead of treating downtime as something she had to earn.
“My bedroom is my sanctuary,” she said.
Her approach offers business owners a practical reminder: Rest belongs on the calendar alongside client meetings, deadlines and other commitments. Making room to recharge does not mean giving up on a goal.
Strength beyond the spotlight
DePaola's willingness to express her opinions helped make her a familiar face on reality television. But confidence does not always require a confrontation or a public response.
“I want to be strong,” she said.
For entrepreneurs, strength can show up in less visible decisions. It might mean declining another meeting, protecting a day off, or choosing not to engage with criticism that distracts from work.
Those choices require discipline. A packed schedule can create the impression of progress, even when it leaves little room to think, plan, or recover.
DePaola's perspective challenges the idea that business owners must be available at all hours to prove their commitment.
Learning when to slow down with Kim D
DePaola describes a different relationship with her time now. Rather than pushing through every invitation and obligation, she makes room for quiet days at home with her dogs.
“You cannot go full speed ahead constantly,” she said.
That advice may sound simple, but putting it into practice requires boundaries. Entrepreneurs can decide which commitments support their goals, which ones drain their energy, and when to step away.
DePaola may remain associated with the drama of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey," but the more useful story for business owners is about how she approaches life beyond the screen.
Success is not only about what someone builds. It is also about whether they can continue to enjoy the life they have built.
